Well I had a chance to see Serenity today, and I have to say that imo it was good. I'd go as far as to say that it was damn good, actually. I was recently turned on to the show, Firefly, that the movie is based solely on. Luckily I managed to watch all 11 episodes in the last month in preparation for the film, and I found those reasonably enjoyable and entertaining as well.
But the movie was in some regards a bit punchier; it opens up with a good action intro and seemed to have a few good surprises interwoven here and there. Just when I thought the movie was about to fall into a lull, it picked up; the pace was well throughout, me thinks and full of some unpredictable twists. I also thought the dialogue was smart, and the interaction of the characters was good; writer Joss Wheddon does a good job of not falling into the typical scifi cliches, and I think he did a great job.
It should be noted that you'll get insight into the history of the somewhat estranged River Tam, and remember the Reavers? Well you'll see plenty of them and get insight to their history as well.
And finally, for diehard fans of the show that haven't seen the movie yet, stay tuned for some real surprises, and I mean real shockers.
Overall a thumbs up from Gort. Go see it; you may at least be entertained. _________________ - Tom Carter

Here in Spain they show it the 21st, I'm eager to watch it. The show was a blast, I hope after the movie they consider doing the series again. _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

I saw the film today (Australia). Haven't seen the series, but I totally enjoyed the film.
It's a long way from perfect, and it's tv origins are obvious, but somehow that stuff doesn't matter. It was just an entertaining piece of film. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

Agreed. The cinematography seemed "TV like", but overall it was way better than I thought it would be. _________________ - Tom Carter

I was really surprised by this one. Quite enjoyable.
I'd only seen about half an episode, and I totally could figure out what was going on. I had to have a friend explain the significance about the "Shepherd" character and who the hell the brunette hottie was, but it wasn't anything that took away from the story of the film.
I really think Hollywood needs to make more films like this. Forget big name actors, this one proved that an entairtaining movie can make up for a lack of "big talent".
Effects were a little weak in spots, but I heard that a SINGLE small effects house did everything, so that scores points in my book. |
