Just to derail the discussion entirely (now that dinosaurs roaming the earth and 90 degrees on Mars have been debunked). If you haven't happed upon the amusing story of John Titor, time traveller, it might be worth spending 15 min on: http://johntitor.strategicbrains.com/

Heh, I just downloaded another program called Mysterious World: Search For Ancient Technology. It basically talked about Congo Cults and how that same mentality must've been at play during the construction of many of the ancient structures--to emulate possible extraterrestrial "Gods" and wanting them to return to earth. One particular bit that was exciting was the Pre-Columbian gold amulets in the shape of airplanes. When they replicated one using molded plastic in larger scale, the thing actually flew very well. They had one version with a propeller, and another version with a propulsion engine--both version flew flawlessly as remote controlled planes. I searched about that on google but could only find one reference to it:

"In 1956, the gold airplane was among exhibits of the Pre-Columbian Gold exhibition in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The deltoid wing and the vertical plane of the tail unit atypical of birds drew attention of American aircraft designers. The directors of the exhibition allowed testing the ancient aircraft in a wind tunnel. It turned out that the gold model could soar at supersonic speed, the issue which was widely studied in that epoch. The ancient model helped aircraft designers of Lockheed create a supersonic plane, the world's best for that period."

Just to be clear, I have no tin-foil hat tendencies. More than anything, these mysterious are simply entertaining. I've been fascinated by these unsolved mysteries since as a child. Everytime I see some program on TV about ancient civilization with engineering skills that baffle a technologically advanced civilization like ours--I'm immediately glued to the TV set. Throw in some extraterrestrial stuff about how they might have helped build all the giant structures that were impossible for primitive technologies at the time-I'm ready to bust out the popcorns. Very Happy

Very interesting, I spent way more than 15 minutes on that. I think the contention isn't really over whether it's a fraud or not, personally I don't believe he was a real time traveller but think it's actually a great exercise in... "live fiction", as if the science and history as a believable role-playing backdrop to allow for someone to question the way in which we're living today (or in 2001, but a lot of it is still relevant), ethics, politics, our comsumerist culture, and all the decadence, ignorance and idiocy around, especially on the internet. It's evident because the John Titor character seems only interested in making conversation - something we ignore so much these days.

I mean, just take this quote for example...

Quote:
((I still don't buy your story. There are inconsistancies that are to large to write off )

I understand your viewpoint and I respect it. However, I am confused by a twist in the way the language is used. Another fellow who posted earlier was a bit upset over what I was saying because he thought I was soon going to ask for money by selling something. Since I dont have anything to sell I am curious why, Idont buy your story, is the natural way to say what you did. I am aware that its off the cuff to say but wouldnt it be better to say I dont believe your story? Why is the other way so common?

or

Quote:
Consider that you are a time traveler who goes back in time to the first week of February 1970 and you are confronted with the same problem. What do you remember right now about the second week of February 1970? Naturally, the conflict in Vietnam and the Middle East come up but as someone has already stated here, thats old news. I suppose I could predict the failure of Apollo 13 spacecraft but since time travel is ridiculous, I would be blamed for sabotage. I might even decide to tell you about an earthquake in Peru but then people that would have died by chance will now live and vice versa.

All I can think of is to make something up. So here goes. The space shuttle mission may or may not have a problem connecting the new lab to the space station.

How was that?
