amazing work guys!
fernstrom: i took me around 8 hours i think over two days.. most of the time i spent thinking about how to do things, instead of just painting.. beeing a 3d artist for 13 years now makes it hard to leave bad habits behind. so i tend to "construct" everything instead of painting what im having in my head.
zombat: aargh.. you are right! you are so right.. it was shooting without aiming.. and i missed.
heres a painting i tried to do faster.. it was 3 hours.

Zombat: Thanks a lot, and the pics helped a ton. That piece is black and white because its gonna be in a comic Im doing up, basically about caterers who serve body parts to people at hotels. A bit of a morbid idea but i like it!
But anyway, yeah its getting into a routine of knowing where the light hits the different areas of the face.
Thanks again, and your portraits are stellar. |

oDD O_O
eren I really like that, would love to see you do another session on it to make it a bit more 'underwater' - on the creature that is, I think you hit it nicely on the rest!
Thanks for the motivation Zombat!

Excellent matty! You have indeed made a big step in the right direction!
A couple things need improvement, though. I hope you don't mind that I did a little paintover as example:
As a preface I'm not sure if you're going for a slightly stylize look or if your going for realism - my suggestions here are based off of the assumption that you're going for realism.
A - most of the time, you can draw a line from the center of the eyes (pupil) down the face and find that it meets or comes close to the edges of the mouth. Additionally, the corners of the mouth are usually softer - they flow into the rest of the face while the center of the lips is a rather sharp transition to the face.
B - if you drew a line connecting the pupils, that line usually rests directly in the middle of the head, with hair not there. Right now, your eyes are looking a little high. Additionally, there should be a little more space from the eyelids to the eyebrows. Furthermore, the whites of the eyes, are white, yes, but they are only so when light is hitting them. In this portrait it appears to me that the light is coming from above, and thefore the eyes should be much darker. Also, eyes are spheres remember, so towards the corners they should get darker, depending on where the light is coming from. Notice in the overpaint that the eyes are little more than a black dot over a grey oval - the lines around the eye do not always need to be as clearly defined as you originally drew them. Again, draw the shapes and forms of light instead.
C - The nose picks up a lot of light, and is the face that is usually higlighted most. Notice in the overpaint how i brought the light up almost as high as the pupils of the eye. The shadow between the forehead and the bridge of the nose is very helpful for defining the curve of the nose and how much brow your subject has.
I think you're biggest weakness at this point is the nose. And I'll be honest, the thing that I found hardest when I started drawing faces was that damned nose. You've got the general shape down (pretty much an extruded trapezoid, but the actual tip and the way it connects to the face on the bottom needs work. Paint the shapes and planes that the light forms, just on a smaller scale. Zoom into your reference and squint.
and definitely keep it up!
im gonna try and do another portrait tonight, I hope. _________________ Zombat

Hi all, one for the day. 1 hour 30 min.
Brush testing often leads to paintings.

Great work everyone.
Fripp: Love those colours!
Zombat: I agree, the nose is not my strongest. Originally, the light was coming from our view of the portrait. Thanks for the overpaint too, the values were superb!
Im gonna stick doing b/w portraits for a while, really want to master the nose!
Thanks again for your great help. |
