Did some one even mentioned Fargo?
Yup,Jucas is right.
What we are here to mention is movies which are bad, not movies which bore us or does not entertain us. A lot of people get bored with certain good movies, cause well, most of the people I know seem to have the attention span of a goldfish.
I cringe at the thought of my brother who said that both Schindler's List and Shawshank Redemption are bad movies. I don't even want to mention the movies which he thinks are good.
The bad movies are the ones where the director thinks he's doing something smart, but doesn't realize how stupid it is, probably because they've never gone to film school or at least learn the 5C's of Cinematography(HK camera Verite...argh). (example: Wong Kar Wai, Tsui Hark)
OR when the director doesn't put in the effort needed to make the movie at least a little special.
Hope that clears things up a bit.
Lunatique: wehehe, Strangeland....arg! I've seen Malaysian productions that are better. and most Malaysian productions are worse than HK productions.
And wahahaahahaha, Tree Merchant is very right!! |

Not another teen movie
The trailer looked promising, but the fact is that the whole movie should have been compressed to the length of the trailer to make it watchable
Time machine (have to repeat myself)
(I've never felt so alone in a cinema, me and my buddy seemed to be the only ones realizing that there was no script in the movie ) |

AAAARRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH !
Landmaster, i agree with the first part of your post, but the exemples you give are....BLAAAAHHHHHHH
yeah, a lot of HK movies suck but Wong Kar Wai is a GREAT director. even if you don't like his style, he is a major filmmaker. that guy obviously knows the rules of "classic" cinematography.
it's like deconstruction in architecture or cubism in art. you learn the basics, then you can twist things. ppl may like it or not but the point is that theses guys make the whole world/society go forward. they open new possibilities and introduce a new way of thinking our tools. there was some guy talking about picasso in this forum, saying that he didn't understood why picasso was so celebrated whereas Bourgereau was "underestimated". i think the pb is not good/bad, nice/ugly, like it/not. it's about meaning and bringing something new.
bourgereau is a skilled technician and a great artist, it s beautiful, ok, but you can find the same stuff looking at the old masters, it doesn't bring something new.
without picasso, mondrian, there would have been no pollock, no rothko, etc...we would still be drawing/painting big pseudo-symbolic figurative stuff. I'm not saying that 'new' is better than 'nice', it's just that when you have both, you deserve greater praise.
imo, that applies to wong kar wai, tsui hark,
but also shinya tsukamoto (tetsuo, tokyo fist...), takashi miike, david fincher, michel ghondry, and others.
yeah. i got carried away, sorry for that

SW:ATOC?
i found the storyline kinda longwinded, lots of unecessary scenes, bad acting, bad(or non-existant)dialogue, but great CGI, i think |

HaRdC0rePixxX: You are talking about Avalon the movie about some jewish kid and his grandfather or something (I stopped watching halfway through that one before I was forced to kill myself), not the Avalon done by the director of Ghost in the Shell (which I thought was pretty damn cool), right? |

ARG, sorry, I forgot to put in the sentence before the brackets... Its supposed to be:
With the exception of some directors.(eg.Wong Kar Wai,Tsui Hark)... -_-..arg
But still I don't think that Wong Kar Wai is a great director,he's good but he's still far behind Chinese directors like Zhang Yimou and Ang Lee.
By the way, I know what you meant on your previous post,
"Learn the rules before breaking them", right? Well, sometimes I think Wong Kar Wai pushes it a little too far, his cuts are sometimes confusing and distracting. There are better contemporary directors out there, one that I like in particular is Quentin Tarantino, well, but only for Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. The other director who knows his thing is Guy Ritchie, he knows what to do, and he broke a lot of rules, but he knew how to break em...
Well, I'm not saying that Kar Wai is bad, I did say he's the exceptional bunch out of the HK directors, but maybe he's resting in his laurels a little bit too much.

HaRdC0rePixxX: Actually I like how the mainstream graphics industry is developing, 20 years ago paintings were done by single person, now at the dawn of 3d and with the technology getting better and better every day, it isn't a surprise to see 10 artist working on the same piece. I don't like cubism and stuff that makes art more simple (by adding simple rules so you have less room to fail, less challenge). It's a major step back in my opinion. Inventing a room where you can interact and see the picture in 3d would be a step forward for comparison, in this case you don't take away of it.. you expand it.
This is a question I like to ask when someone says a painter is better than the other: Could the "artist 1" do the same as "artist 2"? It's an easy way to measure artists. Picasso could have _never_ done the work of Sargent, but I believe Sargent could have produced something like Picasso very well, or come close at least. Picasso simply lacks the knowledge of Sargent and Bouguereau. Those two were more observant and more serious about what they were doing.
Even here, at Sijun, there's a lot of people who strive for perfection and "ultimate knowledge" and those are the guys I appreciate the most. They're learning from the surrounding, not making the world by themselves. You wouldn't be drawing with your Wacom without guys like Einstein.
Went slightly off topic, sorry luna :P |

HPX - hehe, I guess it says more about the genre actually.
Here's my view on Deep blue sea:
Clich and shallow characters played by uninspired actors (who'd rather be playing golf back home - Samuel L. Jackson on the commentary track of the dvd).
The story follows a recycled and very predictable monster movie formula.. I wasn't surprised once in the entire movie.
Imho, you can't do a movie based on 5 ways of being eaten by a cg shark.
I rented it with the expectation of getting some cheap action entertainment, but I didn't even get that
sumaleth: I bought the Exorcist on DVD. I had not seen it before, but of course heard of it, being the scariest movie of all times..
I understand what the movie tries to convey, but to my dissapointment I'm obviously immune to that kind of shock, horror and fear. I just thought it was quite boring. |

"A.I." that was the worst movie that I have ever seen...
After that "The One" comes to mind.
"Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" (or whatever it was) was also terrible, i still have no idea why everybody was so thrilled about it on Oscar nominations...
Both new "Star Wars" episodes sucked. Second was even worse than the first one.
It would be too big of a list, heh. you should have asked which movies we did like... that should narrow it down quite a bit. |

new rose hotel
scenes from a mall
queen of the damned
osmosis jones
pearl harbor
problem child
trapped in paradise
scream 1,2,3...
the family man
back to the future 3
left behind (i was actually forced to see this movie) |

Holy shit there are a lot of people with absolutely no understanding of cinema at all. But there are a few of you that DO know what you are talking about, and you know who you are.

I came to think about Zoolander today.
First of all I have to say that Ben Stiller lacks charisma. And he can only play parts where the main character totally lacks charisma. (which makes you feel sympathy for him)
But in Zoolander he was playing someone who was supposed to be charismatic.
Owen Wilson on the other hand made the movie watchable in short periods.
I have the feeling that Ben stiller (who wrote the movie) wanted to make a good movie by doing such a "bad" movie that it would come back to being good again (unfortunately it stayed on "bad" the whole time)
Am I the only one who feels this way about Zoolander? Maybe people who's first language is english can get some funny vibes from Ben Stiller that I cant "tune into" Is it so? |

what the frig? the royal tenebaums was a great film. and apocolypse now? i think someone called it "boring shit". well, maybe if you actually listened to this thing called "dialogue" it would become more interesting.
as for bad movies:
anything steven segal
anything with michal bay on it
and sometimes his buddy jerry brukhimer makes terrible films too. |

This thread is amazing, I guess it shows how subjective art is. Jaws was bad? Apocalypse Now was bad? I don't know, those are two of the better movies I've ever seen.
The two recent Star Wars movies have to be on the list of really bad movies. They're a testament to what happens when you turn movie making over to a bunch of 3D studios. Seems to me a lot more thought could have gone into the dialogue and plot of those films. |

My only source of televisual input now is watching 50s shows on iFilm (Dragnet, One Step Beyond) so I must say my standards are now quite low.
Plan 9 from outer space was so poorly made (for MY standards) that that added to it. Haven't seen attack of the killer tomatoes. Look forward to it though. |

Jaws was bad??!!....
I for one, and many folks out there like the pace of seventies movies a lot. Now a days you have to cry, laugh, be thrilled all withit a half an hour. Wich I belive is contributing to the fact that you go completely numb and don't give a rats ass. (haha sorry 'bout that, couldn't resist )
It feels much better to critisize good movies than to hammer bad ones. But to name some more:
-Batmans without Burton
-Moon 44
-Any film with 'solar' in the title
I also seem to remember 'Hadwar' but don't know where to place it...?!
