Thanks to my previos post - Movie List. I got a lot of new movies to watch. Thanks guys, haven't seen some of these. Really liked Akira, whoever recomended that.
I never really watched Japanimation before, and I'm interested in watching more.
My friends recomended Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell, but I need more recomendations.
Thanks.

I'm not a big anime fan but here's what I liked.
Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Lain (they're all series. though)
the problem I have with Anime is there aren't enough Movies.
Oh I liked My Neighbour Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service for Movies.. But those are about as far from Akira as it gets. So you might not like those.
Ghost in the Shell Is really good But the comic is INFINITELY better. I can't put that into words well enough. but the Comic KICKS ASS. there... hows that.
A bunch of people will probably Pop on here and Say Watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. I say Watch a few but if you don't like it right off the bat, don't waste your time. It really goes either way. Love or Hate. |

im guessing they made Perfect Blue an anime because an anime artist made it up. Also its made in Japan and anime is popular in Japan. I personally like watching anime more than live-action movies also, theres lots of reasons.
I recomend Neon Genesis Evangelion, the art is amazing. Lain is a wierd piece of work that will make you think. Another good movie is Tokyo Revelation. Also Battle Angel and Iria. The Tenchi Muyo movies are pretty damn good too, nothing like the tv series. |

Lain is very original and moody. I definetly recomend "Lain : Serial Experiments". "Ghost in the Shell" was good but it was merely a plot thinning as far as the whole story with the manga. I suggest buying both if you have the money, the manga and the anime. "Akira" = grounbreaking, animation, the hottest things to hit the coasts of America since hotpants. "Record of Lodoss War" has grand action/battle scenes. You will really like it if you are into roleplaying and fantasy.

Most of the popular ones have been listed (Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell, NGE)...here's one thats absolutely outstanding: Spriggen. It's Akira with visuals on steroids, if you can believe that (and a Metal Gear Solid flair), since Akira is pretty flashy in itself.

I recommend getting to know both the anime and the manga. They're usually two different takes on basically the same subject.
But as for pure anime I recommend Perfect Blue. It is truly one of the best movies ever, and freaked the bejesus outta me. I think someone described it as Hitchcock meets Walt Disney... I, unfortunately have the dubbed version, but the voice acting is (for once) really good.
For more philosophical anime I also recommend The Wings of Honneamise.
Funstuff: Patlabor, Demon Hunter Yohko is quite funny too, and there's plenty of other stuff. There's anime to fit your every possible desire/fetish if you just want to take the effort to find 'em.

They Just showed Perfect Blue at one of the arthouse type theaters here. Can someone explain to me why that was an Anime and not a regular movie? I hate it when they do that. Is it just because they can Make the thing fairly well Animated with a smaller budget or something? LIke they didn't want to Make a "B" movie so they made it animated for the same money? What? |

The anime scene aint too big in Britain but I do have Akira (which the best anime in the world ever) Crying Freeman, Galactic Pirates, the Street Fighter movie (so much better than the series and loads more. But the most twisted of all is definately Urotsukidoji it is one big blood, monster, sex, violence mosh.

The point is that it was made for people who like anime. Its just a certain genre for certain types of people, like how they didnt make Rambo a romance. Just a matter of oppinion. |

Dean Walsh, I don't think it would've worked as well as a live-action film. The freaking-out sequences and several layers of realities are REALLY hard to pull off without cheap tricks the audience can see right through... Can you even imagine how you'd pull off the end sequence? I can't, not without a major budget for CG-effects. I shudder at the thought of a B-movie version of Perfect Blue.
And then there's the actors. Were are you going to find a girl beautiful enough to play the main role? A point the movie makes, is that the pop idols ARE sort of unreal, at least in the eyes of their fans. What better way to portray this than actually MAKE them unreal? The illusion would have been shattered by a flesh&blood actress.
With the animated format the creators can make anything. Their imagination's the limit, and it costs the same to do a dialogue scene as an action scene... The question is, why do it in live-action when you can do it animation? In Japan animation is considered an art-form just as "normal" film.
Oh, and you call Perfect Blue "fairly well Animated"? I personally call it gorgeus.
Anyone else think so?

There isn't ONE spot in that movie that would have to be CG. I think George Lucas is getting to you.
The only thing I can think that would be hard to do would be the scene where she's skipping accross the lampposts but that scene could easily be replaced with something else and it still wouldn't detract from the movie.
But I'm Dead serious. I personally could go out with my video camera and film that last scene match it Shot for shot and composite it together in after effects and it would look 10 times better than anything CG. |

Sorry, I got trigger happy and posted that before I was done.
Welsh not Walsh thanks.
"And then there's the actors. Were are you going to find a girl beautiful enough to play the main role?"
Gee- I dunno - maybe a real Pop Idol?
I do like the comment about the situation being sort of unreal and better suited to animation though. that Certainly makes sense.
Yeah I call it fairly well animated. We're comparing it to Akira and Ghost in the Shell here. Akira I call Mind-blowingly superb animation. This one was pretty par for the course when it comes to Animation in movies from Japan.
Does all this make sense?

I recently found the Lain: Serial Experiments soundtrack (remixed by someone called DJ Cyberia) in mp3 format. hooray for mp3s! i'm sure i'd never find that on cd. at any rate, its really cool. a couple tracks are ruined by the dj pulling an ego trip and plastering his voice everywhere. if i'm really lucky, i'll find the un-remixed versions somewhere...
also, for a really MOVING really GOOD anime movie, try Grave of the Fireflies. almost made me cry. anything by studio ghibli is really visually excellent, even if most of it is aimed at kids.

i don't get it why people consider akira and neon genesis evangelion gods and superb and hyper and megagood, akira is a total assfuck of the comic- with shitty art and animation, and neon genesis evangelion is just horrible to watch...

Anything by Hayao Miyazaki!
for example:
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
nausica (I think the western version is called warriors of the wind or something)
Porco Rosso is my favorie Anime/cartoon period.
Uhhh...... Ninja scroll is good as well. Don't know much else. |

Akira's animation was excellent... it was the story and the direction outside of the action sequences that was dook.
Ninja Scroll is still my fav.
They need to make more feature length anime.. hell there just needs to be more feature length animated movies outside of disney or don bluth.. either that or make some with more mature subject matter.. no f&!king songs... musicals make me spew black bile.
Give us our sex, drugs and rock n' roll... chips, dips, chains & whips optional.

count zero- duh.
god damnit does it ever look like 90% of anime's animation is 5 fps and made out of carton flaps that the "animators" bend around, death to that.
i don't care if the 5 fps animation is a part of the style and that anime wouldn't be anime without that, it still looks shitty.

faustgfx: Have you even seen Akira? Granted a lot of the animation in Anime is Pretty damn crappy. But I don't know if it's possible to think Akira looked at all that way.
Granted The comics were cooler but there were... what.... 60 or 70 of them boiled down to an hour or two. It's pretty amazing that anything at all from the comics made it into the movie. |

Here is not so short list of recommended Titles:
Ninja Scroll
AKira
Neon Genesis Evangelion (incredible design)
Record of Lodoss War
Slayers (if you like silly humour)
Urusei Yatsura (if you like more silly humour)
Ranma 1/2 (if you need still more humour.)
Ghost in The Shell
Grey (a classic that is hard to come by but on of the best there is.
If you want to read some japanese Comic books I would recommend these.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (A Lord of the Rings of Japan)
Sanctuary (Japan's answer to the Godfather and GoodFellas)
Blade of the Immortal ( a great samurai story with great stylistic art) |

It's called Dragon Half. If that's would you are talking about, then I can't agree with you more. The only bad thing is that they only made two episodes because it didn't get much of a viewing in Japan. The story is based on Manga that spanned over dozen books or so, if I remember correctly. The story was about a half girl half dragon(hence the name) who wants to see her favourite Rock Star Dick Saucer who also happens to be a Dragon Slayer. |
