Gotta toss in "Vampire Hunter D" in there. Doesn't hang with Ninja scroll and Akira for some of the effects, but has a nice dark plot line.

Vampire Hunter D is one of the biggest piles of excrement to ever be put to celluloid.

If my comments can keep one poor soul from seeing the film and wasting precious hours from his life on it... then it has been worthwhile....

Both Akira and Ghost in the Shell r incredible (but watch them w/subtitles cause no one can shout like the japanise(spelling?))

diminion is good but i rate macros plus over it (stomping areo 'mech things woohoo)

and patlabor is very funny (seeing that labor beat another 2 death with a sevored arm had me in fits)

3x3 eyes is ok (very grusome and more than a little odd in places)

but fist of the north star is crap on a stick! and should die a ugly death :P

Most of the stuff mentioned above is in manga format and only then is made into anime(like real movies are often books first,duhh... ). I suggest reading the manga AND watching the anime if possible. For example, Ghost in the Shell is a totally different experience in manga than anime. I you think the anime was "deep", it's actually a dumbed-down version of manga. And they left out the frickin' fushikomas in the movie!
But just remember not to compare them too closely, you'll bound up being disappointed by one or the other; treat them as separate entities.
Enjoy.

i agree the story isnt as good in most anime as it is, in it's comic counterpart; but the artwork is a thousand times better.

Umm, no it isn't. :P
Just look at Masamune Shirow's works; no WAY the animated versions of any of his work can be said to be superior. His way of drawing even the smallest details accurately can't really be put into animated form without spending massive amounts of time and effort.
But yeah, in some cases you're absolutely right. You can't take as many artistic liberties in animation as in the comics.
