Hi, I know that there are some l33t programmers here doing demoscene stuff.

I'd really like to know how (just in principle, not in detail) a realtime 3d rendering engine works. I have had some programming experience in the good old times of C64 (basic) and XT (pascal, a bit asm) but the stuff on the OPENGL website is beyond me.

I don't want to try to actually program something like that, I am just curious how those coders come up with them..

If you know it and have time to explain, or if you have a link that might help toss it my way please.

Lots, and lots of math. A friend of mine and I wrote a simple 3d particle engine in Pascal a number of years ago, which wasn't entirely difficult. A simple 3d projection of a point is very basic math, but, well, hell, I really dont know much about it. 3d engines like you see in the demo scene are many times more complex than what I ever did. Plus, heavily optimized.

I'd rather be an artist. Ask Ceenda.. he's got a rather nice terrain engine going written in GL I think.

I'd put my wittiest remark here, but I'd scare you.
