I know I'm nowhere near the level of some of you - for all intents and purposes I've started learning to draw about a week ago :-)

Got my tablet yesterday, and this is what I came up with until now.

I would absolutely love some hints on what mistakes I made so I can avoid making them in the next pictures... I did the eye first and then, after looking through the paint along with fred thread I decided to make pictures with as sharp a lighting as I can, if possibly all located in one place, so I can work on getting the lighting right (hopefully).

So... how badly have I failed, and more importantly how can I avoid doing that next time?

I would also love some tips on technique, as I am having some trouble with getting the smooth, perfect curves/shadings and all that... Right now the way I do it is to first draw a sketch using the tablet, with just the (very) rough shapes, then I create a new layer and use an opacity-variable paintbrush to roughly fill/shade in the shapes. Then I choose my colours and fill in each section which will have roughly the same colour, and then I use the dodge/burn tools, and sometimes another layer set to multiply, to shade it all. Note: I only figured out there were different settings for burn/dodge (ie midtones etc) somewhere in the middle of making the pirate pic...

Oh, by the way, you might need to turn your monitor's darkness down for the flower one... try to turn it down enough so that the top of the stalk is only barely visible.

Enough with me speaking already, your turn :-)

I don't have a Wacom so it is not up to me to point out any errors. As far as I can see you did a damn good job for your first try. I love the flower and the iris of the eye.The only thing I can see is that the eyebrow is too close to the eye. Well done. You can only get better with practice, goes for all of us. Keep up the good work

Thanks :-)

Well, you don't have to have a Wacom tablet to point out errors, just two physical eyes and another in your mind, and you're set for giving critiques on other people's work :-)

with both your first and third pictures, the eye is far too big for the rest of the features. in the first picture, you have more eyelashes than a regular eye would, and they're way more perfect than real life. in fact, they remind me of a pair of fake eyelashes i saw recently. the other thing that you're missing are the contours of the eye socket. the eye is a sphere, and the eyelashes follow the contour of the sphere.

i'd suggest getting a mirror, and trying to draw your own eye. forget what you think you know about how eyes look, and just draw what you see. you'll be surprised at some of the shapes you see.

i think if you fixed up the eye in either picture, it would look a lot better.

as far as the 2nd picture, i really like the stem. it looks almost rendered.

Thanks! I'll do that for the next eye I have to draw! In fact if I can find a colletion for photographed faces I'll do for faces/eyes what I'm doing now for hands... ( http://www.mode-x.com/gallery/hands/ )...
