I have the athlon classic and am very pleased with it's performance. If you're going for a newer line up I'd suggest the t-bird, but since you want budget then go for the duron.

Remember to pick a good and well recomended motherboard to go with the cpu.

And in photoshop - memory is really crucial, which i'm sure you know already

I know this is a random musings thing but I would like some input quickly.

Is there anyone here using a Duron or T-Bird CPU? Im not concerned with the classic athlons

Im considering upgrading to one of these as soon as Friday. What interests me was of course the 200Mhz bus that I know Photoshop likes and naturally its price.

If anyone here uses one and deals with LARGE files sizes I would appreciate any input.

Oh, Im upgrading from an old 466 Celeron that CANNOT keep up. And yes I know DDR chipsets are arriving but I only have a $500 budget and would like to save some of that..

Thanks

Duron will definitely give you the most bang for your buck . . . I believe its about $60 for a 600 MHz right now.

I have a classic Athlon at 700 MHz on an Asus mobo with 256 megs of RAM. Love it to death.

Well, its not that important now, I bit the bullet and got a PIII 700 Guaranteed to 1008Mhz cC0 stepping for $329. Im going to through that into a Cusl2.

For 2D stuff, the P3 will be fine . . . but if you're doing any 3D rendering, I'd cancel the order and pick up a Duron instead. A 750 Duron will blow the doors off a 1GHz P3 at 3D stuff.

But like I said, for 2D, the Intel chip is more than capable.

My Thunderbird 700 makes me feel al kinds of studely

But really, it's a very good processor. Only buy it if you have some money to burn though, cause Durons are very good also.
