I want to say that I work with DAQ, and yes we hired that kid a few months ago. He may try to come off as either appologetic, misunderstood, or otherwise seemingly deserving of our sympathies. Please do not be swayed by his pathetic cries. He absolutely came in here one day, showed us the illustrations, absolutely said that he did them, and got a job. His fraudulent act is punishable by law and he will pay. Probably starting with every nickel he earned here. We were talking around the watercooler all day, as you can imagine, and the consensus is that day in, day out we are all busting our asses to learn new software, be creative on demand, and otherwise try our best to work hard and accomplish something. The moiney he made of Craig's work could have been a pay raise for us ball-busting shwag artists. That freaking stings.
As to why he lasted four months. He was only on a limited schedule, like 20 hours a week. And he might have showed up for like three or four of those hours. No kidding. He took a week off for his sister's wedding. He also said that he had karate practice every afternoon, so it was hard for him to show up a lot of the time. The list of B.S. is just stunning. We hire temps here all the time, so it is not THAT weird to have drifter types, but how were we to really know he was that fraudulent.
Finally Gabe, know this. I live in Herndon, two miles from your house. I am a trained artist with a liberal arts background. But I am also a conservative, right wing, deer killing, gun-packing mean son of a bitch and if I ever see you at the mall, or the supermarket, or the movies, I will get my pay raise out of your ass. You owe a lot of people you miserable little shit. And believe me, when the sheriff's office issues your subpoena, me and my pals will be there with the XL-1, and the whole show will be on- line soonafter. Later bitch! |

Greech: It's all he deserves. However, there are people like that all over, in large numbers. Kids who do that and grow into men STILL doing that. An issue that I remember that occurred a year ago was a little simular.. an American "composer" was getting payed and getting lots of attention over at MP3.com from selling music made by underground demo scene composers (who were somewhat famous for their works, in this underground international group of people who counts in the thousands). He ended up fighting, and lying to the last minute trying to defend himself, even blaming those composer's who's songs he stole and made money off of for trying to destroy his image. He ended up being taken off MP3.com, and his site went down... never heard of again... at least, under that name. People like that are retarded, and don't grasp reality. They only know how to get attention from lies, and they never learn -- they just keep popping up, and being parasites of society. I suppose your company should be more careful on hiring artists...
cheers,
frost. |

Ohhhhh gosh! If it's got 3 pages it's got to be a "someone gets torn to shreds"-thread! Didn't know i was THAT right. Pity the site is down already...
Gabe: Quiet now, enough damage done. If you are still interested in doing great art, watch this site, listen closely and learn.
The lynch mob(TM): Come on, cool off a bit, already. You afraid of a lamer? If you are good, not this idiot will take your place in the long term, IMHO. Poor kid... |

That's sad. I remember this kind of stuff happening in middle school, but obviously some people are just pathological enough to try and do it when they're older. People like Gabe should just keep chanting this mantra to himself: SOMEONE IS GOING TO FIND OUT...SOMEONE IS GOING TO FIND OUT...

You know what annoys me most about this incident? It's that Gabe didn't think my work good enough to poach. Damnit!

hmm, brilliant. I saw this once before. A guy set up an ISP which promptly went under and everyone who signed up took a bath. His address was published and the guy went into hiding because people kept breaking his windows and smashing up his car (meanwhile these acts were reducing the amount of punishment that bankruptcy law could dish out. And rightly so.)
Get a fucking grip. This isn't some feudal 10th century world. We don't drag out the unworthy and stone them anymore. We figured out that human judgement isn't perfect no matter which side you're on.
Take that address down. It's none of our business where he lives. |

Ok. I've had my fun with this thread, but this is my last post on this subject. I just want to address something I feel seems to be often misunderstood.
I make a living of art. It's my job. It's not something I do for kicks, or for my health. I may enjoy doing it once in a while, but mostly I earn a living doing it. Now, when a company is looking for a talented artist, and a Mr.Reiser[tm] gets the job based on MY portfolio its work that I am NOT getting. This could be in the form of a freelance gig that they would have given to me, that may be a salaried position that I may have wanted, etc. Point is, it's work that was attracted based on my hard-earned reputation/portfolio, and thus was 'rightfully' mine. This, in my humble opinion, is as close as reaching into my pocket and stealing my wallet, as you're going to get.
Now you may say, 'Hey Mr.Reiser[tm], doesn't have the talent of the artist he has liberated from, so sooner or later they're going to notice that'. That sounds good on paper, however I find reality to be somewhat different. As in Mr.Reiser's[tm] example it took the company 4 months to figure it out. Think of the money wasted on him during that time. Truth is, that many company's can't tell what's good or not, because the people in charge oftentimes do not possess the artistic wherewithall to distinguish quality from garbage.
Bottomline. This sort of behavior isn't just a prank. It's theft. Theft of monetary compensation, theft of time for having to persue the thief, and theft of your hard-earned reputation. Pure and simple, and should be treated as such. Obviously the only people having been 'harmed' by this particular gentleman are Craig and Dhabih, thus its really their decision to deal with this as they see fit. Not any of ours. Personally, I've pursued legal action in similar circumstances, or at least got their sites yanked. However, endorsing ANY sort of violence is quite clearly wrong and is equally atrocious. I feel even ridiculous having to point this out.
Anyhow, I'm just trying to underscore that, despite popular opinion, this sort of behavior is far from being a minor error in judgement.
No more soapbox for me.

It goes a bit beyond stealing from Craig and Dhabib. I'm sure some legitimate artist who applied at this company didn't get the job because Gabe had a "superior" portfolio. You can bet THAT person would be pissed far and beyond anyone else... |

I'd like to comment to what Frost said:
This incident involving demo musicians touched atleast two friends of mine - they made their name during the early and mid 90's and got really famous in our circles. Then along comes this absurd guy who recklessly steals their work, claims it to be his and even gains profit and 'glory' by doing so.
It's very frustrating to notice this kinda things are happening and there's nothing you can do.
-Marvel
p.s. these friends of mine were Skaven and Purple Motion from our group, the Future Crew. |

I do hope some form of legal action is undertaken and followed through. This shit has got to stop.
Ironically, I wonder how many people here screaming at the top of their lungs about stealing somebody elses property have their HD's filled with illegal mp3's..
Something to think about perhaps?

Marvel: Hey, I remember your name in the demo scene... very nice to finally meet you. =)
Yeah, that is exactly the fake loser who I was referring to... who ripped Purple, Skaven, Scorpik, and many others.

Marvel: I always wondered why Purple didnt relese a cds with those old tracks. That stuff is extrmally good, one of a kind too. Music like that doesn't exist in the 'big world'. He would just have to do midi remake. |

Seeing how purple isn't actually a color, just a word invented by Crayola for their crayons, does the band Purple have to pay royalty rights on their name to Crayola? |

Nori; nice argument, but Danny's point is still valid. Both acts are illegal, and both acts cause other people to loose money -or- for you to gain money. The net result is the same.

this is sad.
"it has to stop" ??
how?
a mullins rip might be detectable, but how many of the less recognisable really great concept art posted just on this forum, nevermind following your urls, wind up in signature practice folders?
sorry to be devil's advocate, but a lot of you guys are really good (even if you don't get as many replies as a spooge thread, you know it) ... and there are a lot of other guys who are really reiser.
just a suggestion: post only low quality, small size or cropped files. or use a big opaque layer of your sig on top at full width & height, not just the easily cropped corner. share better copies via email only. most of us wanna share and learn techniques, we don't (always) need the full res psds for that.

Elmme make a point there. How do we actually know that the gaberesier post earlier in this thread is REALLY gabe reiser. Yet more things to ponder.... Because if he does frequent the forums to find the post, don't you think more of "his" art would be found on that site of his? Just a few thoughts. |
