I have a personal project which requires a backdrop depicting the vastness of space; this includes various stars and gasses among other elements.
What components are necessary to ensure the scene is effective? Do you have any techniques useful for creating nebula in particular?
Feedback from any who deal with subjects of this nature would be greatly appreciated.

There is a book called
"PhotoShop 5 3D Textures" in the 'f/x design' range that has a nice step by step process of creating nebulars - page 141. (by geoffrey smith, ISBN:1-57610-274-2).
I thought it was an alright book to give you ideas on how to create textures in PhotoShop. Anyhow I based the lower part of the image below on some of their ideas:
