I looked up Oil Pastels in the search, and I didn't find anything but one image.

So I thought that I would post something I am working on, from my art class using Oil Pastels.

Is this how oil paint is too? Cause i really like Oil Pastels and i have an easy time with them.

Critique is expected and wanted, and general comments are appreciated.

Yes, it's a reproduction (unfinished) of Starry Night by Van Gogh, and I used a print that my Art Teacher owned as refrance.

Looking good.
That painting was in Van Gogh's later years, you can tell by the swirls which he began to incopperate into his paintings the turmoil he was enduring.
Atleast this is what the *experts* claim......which could be quite right.

Work it up some more.....those white gaps between each stroke are something to be looked at, I was taught that that was naughty. But I never listened to them.....spose thats why they never did like me.

I believe that oil pastels are meant for smudging and blending things a bit more... could use a smudge stick or your finger to smoothen out the colors there. Remember to spray hit with hair spray or something similar to prevent it from smearing when your done. And actually, oil painting is much different from oil pastels. Just because they have oil doesn't mean they're similar.... (well they bot have oil) Oil painting is rather expensive and the oil is hard to wash off if stained in clothing. Oil painting offers a bit more 3d effect because you can actualyl make layers........ arghhhhh...... I'm not explaining this well, so i'll just shuddup.

nice Van Gough
i also think you could smudge a bit more cause the sly has too much white spaces in it. And knowing this painting i believe there should be more purplish blue and such in it more then the reds.
But so far it is looking goods.
Oil paint is not the same. Well it is oil but you work with it defferent i think.
Good job so far

argh oil pastel were nightmare for me to work with... until I discovered "essence minrale".
Please true bilingual gentledudes, a frog in distress needs assistance !

That clear, odorless liquid sort of melts the crayon strokes away so you can smudge it easyer either with you fingers or an oil paint brush -DON'T use acrylic brushes!
It's nice if you want to do a flat background color on a somewhat large part of your sheet. -like that tree for example-

The only thing is I wouldn't use that on direct paper as you seem to be using. We used a large 2 ply paper coated with 2 layers of white matte latex on the drawing side and one layer of the stuff on the back. All applied with a roller of course.

Btw, how big is your drawing ? You may want to draw big if you want to be able to do any detail there . But again it's Van Gogh so dunno your goal !

Hope the infoclut will be of some use

Oil pastels be fun. I did my final major work with them. That was 50cm x 76cm. Definately learnt alot about them through this, and if I revisited this pic, could prolly do it a piece better.

Definately continue with this. Has mucho potential! Make sure you post it when it's done. @:-)
