Pretty much all I see around here is photoshop and painter, so I was wondering: does anyone use/have tried the Gimp? if so, what are your impressions?

I tried it just recently and my first impression was a very good one.
it has basically the same features (when it comes to painting) that photoshop has with the difference that its free and does not cost anything.

however after some time painting it started to use the hdd extensively (even though it was a 500x500 painting on a pII350 128MB) and slowed down to an unacceptable level.

but dont get me wrong.. I think gimp is great.
