What makes a good post?

I ask this because I am simply confused. An example of what I am talking about: I recently spent hours painting a picture that I was generally pleased with. So I posted it on the 'work in progress' forum (‘Non shall pass’ was the subject name), hoping for a response from people who actually know what they're talking about. I received a record breaker of two comments (I am grateful).

Do I need to be female or join one of those ever-lasting threads to get noticed? At the very least, all I want to know is if my image is good or bad. I realise that there are plenty of people with this same problem but it makes me feel SO unwelcome.

Well the member count is over 6000, and you did get 2 replies...

I think Dizzypope hit it on the head with his c&c, sometimes there's just not a whole lot to add when that happens. My guess is people saw your image, said to themselves, nice image, saw dizzypope's crit and said, yes, I agree, then didn't bother to be redundant.

Your image is well executed but a bit obscure, and a bit lacking in visual impact, this could also be a reason for poor response - people think, hm, that's nice, better than I could draw... then they pass on, because the image doesn't grab them by the balls so to speak, and they have no advice to give since it's better than they could have done it anyway.

You should try to find the essence of your image, the feeling you're trying to evoke, and amplify that as much as you can.
So if you want an imposing threatening figure (just guessing), maybe try making the whole image darker, maybe some mist, a low perspective looking up at a menacing shadowy form with glowing eyes... that's a clicheed example but you get my meaning.

I agree 100% to what Mr Stahlberg said.

You say: "...all I want to know is if my image is good or bad."

I can only answer from my point of view, but the reason I don't give a lot of comments/paintovers is because I am insecure of what people want. If people here could give more info on what they're trying to achieve with their images, I'd be more than happy to help. Also, I am uncertain whether my input is appreciated or not.

A post like; "New pic, c&c please" is not good enough. Give more info like; what you're trying to achieve, how long time you've spent on it, for what purpose, what you're satisfied with, what you want to keep, what you want to change, colors, concept etc etc etc. This will make things easier for us to give valuable critique.

Like somebody said earlier; you can't comment on manga anatomy with "eyes are too big".

So, as Lunatique might have put it; Don't expect to be "spoon fed" with critique unless you tell us what to critique on.

Keep at it, you're not unwelcome.

If you said you were hot blonde from Finland with a DD cup size and asked if we liked your sketch of Garfield you did on a phone book, do you think you'd get more response?

Hell yes! I'm not being very helpful but it's true!

You are spot on Steve.

I worried that this subject would sound arrogant or vain, but all I wanted to hear was basically what you have said.

In reply to henrik, I tried to tell people some of these things you mentioned (how complete the image is, what I am unhappy with, etc).

Hmm...Maybe I should title my post: hot blonde from Finland with a DD cup size unveils sketch of Garfield on a phone book.

Blonde? Where???

Yeah - things have changed here - also - since there are 6000+ members, the ammount of posted artwork went up steeply, so the threads don't stay around as much anymore as they used to.

These days I only hang here in the digiart discussion section. Because things aren't what they used to be anymore ... which is kinda sad, but that's the usual progression of popular forums ...

Keep your spirit up. And thank god there are still people like Steven sticking around ...

I was originally a member between #1000-2000 but I rarely posted work because I didn't own a Wacom pen. I then lost my password when I went to University. So I recently made a new profile, but now (as you said) there are too many people.

Another problem I've discovered is that people seem to suck up to the better artists. You'll notice that the same people get 15+ comments each time they post (this also includes Flat[666] for different reasons).

Like you said, it is a real big shame what this forum has deteriorated into. It would be great if some how this forum could be split. Or if another was linked.

Any thoughts on that?
