.
Larger version here...
This is a design for the cover of a book called Der Rattenfnger. The book is used as a prop throughout a play, telling the story of the Jewish exile from Germany just prior to WWII. As such I wanted to mimic the style used on the propaganda posters from that era in history.
The shapes are all slightly stylised, and there is little to no blending since these posters would originally have been screen printed.
The feeling should be sinister yet intriguing. Dark but in a way that would appeal to the children to whom the story is read.
Comments and crits appreciated - do you think I suceeded in my task?

If you want to emulate the old war poster, I think you should definitely lose the glow around your main figure. I suggest you draw the glow as radiating angles, like 50's cartoon artists liked to draw punches. Alternatively, paint the glow by hand instead of using a uniform filter. All those old posters were done by hand, and the brushwork would add to the quality of the piece. Also, I feel that the propaganda posters used bigger areas of black than what you have in your poster. Lastly, there is not much depth in the composition of the picture. Almost all the old posters had something coming out at the viewer, and a definite harsh light source. Those are my thoughts on improvements.
