Well, I was browsing Dhabih's tutorial the other day, and picked up a few things that seemed useful, so I thought I'd try it out. Here's what I came up with:
I guess I should provide a little background about myself. I'm a 15 year-old amateur artist; living in Canada, I've never had the privilege of taking an art lesson or class in my life; I've been drawing for almost three years, and I started dabbling with digital art about five or six months ago.
Anyways, if you have comments or critisisms about the pic, and I'm sure you do, please let me know. |

Welcome to the world of Digital Art, anyway, your painting is great, a few things though, I think you should learn more about the shade of skin color, the use black to shade skin is not correct. Take a look at other's ppl work and see for ya self, hope that helps |

Thanks. I hate to sound like I'm a Photoshop newbie, but is there a particular Burn setting that would make the shading of the skin look right? The default one makes the shaded regions more or less bright red, and the one I used (highlights) makes it go black. Manually changing the color and airbrushing each tone is a pain in the ass, that's all. I really wish I had a tablet. |

I think what people will tell you now, is that Burn/dodge are passe, and you should pick all your own colors by hand... here's the easiest way to learn.... draw untill it looks right, then look at other people's work untill you see what you think is wrong with yours, and draw again each tool is just that, it's a tool, use it to get the result you want, or find a diffrent tool if it dosn't work |

Yeah, I just did some looking around, and it seems like selecting shadows and highlights manually is the only choice. |
