Your human anatomy needs a lot of work.
However, that colored bug you've done is miles above the other work you've shown here. Very slick... Nice job! |

As always, thanks for the comments/critiques!! I'm glad to hear the colored version was "an improvement".
My problems with anatomy may be due to my lack of references and, at the same time, dedication to cartoon art. I would say that 95% of my artwork comes from straight imagination (and memory of the subject). Basically I sit in front of a blank sheet of paper and draw what I remember and how my mind's creativity sees the image.
This is something I think I need to change in my work. Maybe by taking the time to draw more out of magazines (or other references)and studying more the anatomical structure, or going to a social place and just drawing people as they walk by....any ideas?
I'd really like to hear some suggestion on how you all have gained this kind of experience.
Thanks again!

Until they reprint the Andrew Loomis books, specifically Drawing for all it's Worth...I'd pick up a Jack Hamm figure drawing book. It's a good starter. I try to hit figure drawing drop-in classes whenever I can too. Your local art gallery, and art colleges will probably have them, usually around 5 bucks per 3 hour session.
Even when cartooning, you need a good sense of anatomy. Drawing from memory only works effectively when you've got the fundamentals under your belt. It does help you understand volume, and helps devellop your style through repetative paractice though, so try to keep up a bit of both- Drawing from memory and drawing from reference. |

Thanks for the info and great ideas Red!
I'll look into that book and try to find some local art activities.
