you've definitely developed a style here, which is good to see, but it is quite recurrent throughout the pictures and they look somewhat homologous as a result....my favourite is picture 1 because it gives a break from the black-shaded too-contrasted look of the other ones. picture 6 I'd get rid of because it's way too ambiguous...there is so much candy colouring and black that you can't make out what's what. I like the last piece, it's unique. it appeals to me that you make good use of red throughout your drawings, which is hard to do. piece 4 does not look like it fits in with the rest which is again, good because it breaks up the routine....picture number 3 is the most refined one and the black shading works best within it. overall, I'd like to see you try more varied colour schemes and perhaps try paintings with clearer definition, just to spice things up. still, much talent to be seen here. oh, and a great fairytale sort of atmosphere on picture 5. |

Your work seems solid, but I have to agree with Madmout, the colored images seem excessively dark, contrasty and saturated. The first one is my favorite as well; the design seems excellant and I love the lost edges and blurring in certain areas. Number four is probably my least favorite (not that its bad). If you were going to change anything on them, I'd say take them into photoshop and play with the sponge tool a bit; see what they look like desaturated in areas.

Not totally on-topic, but here goes:
I was wondering about how things work Stateside for submissions of freelance work to Games Workshop owned/related publishers, as here in the U.K i have found that (as far as i have ascertained) most of the art is produced by GW inhouse staff and that anything freelanced out through companies that licence and publish related products still have to have all artworks vetted by GW before giving it the go ahead.
Oh - and i luv the Kroot, very nicely done

Cin:
yeah, i hear ya. I'll see if i can't tone some stuff down in the future.
Satan:
Well, up until a few days ago, Sabertooth was a completely
separate entity, working under license from GW.
I know they preferred getting all new artwork from (for the most part)
established illustrators for the cards and believe they only used existing
GW art/doctored photos/etc. when they couldn't fill it with new.
I'm basing this opinion on information gathered from the STG forums
and from illustrators who worked on the set.
All the art did have to pass through GW UK for ultimate approval though.
Now that GW has acquired 85% of STG, things may change, but i would
imagine that the (GWUK) in-house artists are busy enough as it is, and
would hope that they'd let STG continue to generate new imagery. I say
this because it would be much cheaper and less of a hassle for GW to just
start filling cards with high-quality stock illustrations from thier vault.
we'll see what happens.
thanks for the Kroot kudos. been getting that a lot... looks like my work's gotta start headin' that direction. hehe. |

What?! No Sisters of Battle? BAH!
The Kroot is well done, and also is more in line with GW artwork then the others. If I remember correctly many of the inhouse artist are tortured and forced to eat warp-stone until all their pictures have that homologous GW look to them.
Personally I'd say you would need to submit more then 4 images. Perhaps enough to show a consistent style and repeatable level of quality. Maybe 10? I don't know. |

Thanks for the feedback.
very solid, very well received.
I'm going to remove the following images from the sumbission:
3. because based on yours and other feedback the Snow image shows a breadth of palette and is cleaner than the other.
6. you're right, it's pretty chaotic, and was more of a study in a way, so the creature anatomy is whacked in the BG guys.
7. It's not genre-appropriate.
do you think 4 images will be enough for a submission? |

nope, no sisters. not yet.
I think i want to do more Eldar first. I'm on a Warp Spider kick.
on the Kroot, thanks... i was definately going for the "GW interior B&W inkwash" look, hence the faded BG and stuff. It's fully digital though.
I wish i had 10 really good images to show, but i don't. well, not appropriate for a 40k CCG game anyway. So at that, i'd rather put forth a few nice ones than include more with substandard work. but yeah, maybe that's not enough to show said quality level. Oh well. |

Saw the Kroot picture in the February issue of White Dwarf. I guess that doesn't hurt your chances, eh? |
