Hey, sorry I'm not around very much. I've been studying a lot, and working. But I got this done, so it should serve as my appology.
It started as an ink drawing, but I couldn't resist coloring it. A small reference was used for the background, and the characters are totally made up (ie: no background story behind them)

ace, matte-knife. the background is working great .. it's not over nor under-worked. and the shadows. and the faces. hehe. my only crit would be that as neat as the chicks earings look, they just dont fit the semi-flat shaded style of the rest of the image.
..but again, great image! |

Isric I showed your stuff to a colleague of mine ( A former Disney animator) and he was impressed, then when he found out your age, he was even further impressed... you work is very clean and you are well on your way to a great career..
my advice to you is to work more on your overall gestures in your characters.. not to say that you are doing anythign wrong with your current work.. you're characterizations are wonderful.. but you should emphasize some more dynamic posing.. really push the envelope... my friend and I discussed this one time, and we sort of came to a realization that illustrators don't typically have animation stylings to their art.. illustrators tend to become academic/stiff in their work... except for the likes of Leyendecker or Cornwell, they exude a stylistic purity to their work, that is often missed in most illustration work we see today.. but I think you are there already in the sense that you have a nice "movement" to your work.
I do think you need to explore more than just stagnate standing posees in your characters.. you do alot of those, and thers nothign wrong with that, but don't become stuck with them.... do this gestural exploration in your work, and I'll be asking you for a job one day... check out the character design work in the Disney Art of book for Mulan, theres an artist in there who does this gestural work extremely well, I'm sorry but I forget his name, I believe he is Japanese, so that may help..
and BTW got your e-mail, consider yourself linked |

Dude. Sweet.
I notice the light does not conform to the woman's shape. Is this a choice?
Beautiful stuff. Thoughtful layout. Heh heh, but that dudes jaw is to long and jutting.
(takes off running...) |

Icannon- thanks a lot. Your comments are always appreciated
General Confusion- thank you. I've been trying so hard to break away, and now that you've commented, that's the last push. Actually I've been experimenting a little already (this has been on my mind for quite some time), and I really do want to break away for listless poses. Thanks for the recomendations, books, names, and crits.
AliasMoze- yeah, that was a choice. I wanted a touch of the graphic in there.
well, 1-15th of the comments I used to get here in the old days, but they were extremely helpful and worth 5 pages of sunshine being blown up my ass. Thanks guys, as always |

I really dig the colours, has a nice subtle touch...its very graphic, but natural=)
I get the feeling that the BG and characters are not coming together as well as they could. no lines on the BG and it's more realistic...whereas you are really pushing graphic in the characters. but it's pretty subjective stuff, so Idunno. |
