A couple images I've already posted in the DC thread, just wondering if anyone had any comments or critiques for me. The first took about 2 hours in PS, the second took about 3 hours in PS... Far too long for such a loose image but it involved a lot of trial and error... Thanks in advance for any comments.

The first one has some really great textures. Almost looks like it was done on a very rough paper is some parts. And the very minimal linework works really well.
I love the whole western like style of the second one. It looks very cartoony, which I actually don't like. And maybe it's just me, but I had seen that picture 3 times today, and just now when I was writing this post is the ifirst time I really noticed that he wasn't just holding a bat, but that it actually had a blade. There are parts of him that look transparent...and maybe that's the effect you were going for, but combined with all the very solid looking parts, it just seems unfinished.
And finally, I'm not fond of all the different colors. I think a lot of them work on their own, but in combination...in particular I think that the sky, which is great, clashes with the orange in the skull (which is also great by itself) and the reddish brown of his scythe.
That shadow, however, kicks my ass in multiple ways. I love it. |

Hey Tinusch!
I like the first one, has a strange creepy feel to it, the shadow in it rocks alot :]
Im pretty much with fukifino on the second one, the colors just clash like the titans. Id get rid of the pinkish tone and also make the scythe a more unsaturated brown maybe.
Also I do like the upper body of death, but the lower one, especially his lower legs and feet somehow feel wrong. |

Thanks a lot for the reply. Glad you like the first one. That was actually a throwaway after two failed attempts to bring the linework to life, but I decided to give it another go with the brown background instead of the original white. The textures were done last just to give the image a little more interest.
The second one is plagued with problems... The cartoony look was completely unintentional and undesired, but I can't seem to avoid it. I figured keeping it loose would prevent me from turning it into a cartoon, but I don't know what happened. The transparency issues were the result of an attempt to force the illusion of depth... Guess it didn't work too well. I wanted him to be more than just a silhouette, but I wasn't sure how else to do it than by misting over some areas. Any tips? The scythe was a total nightmare, I couldn't get it to look right. The perspective, the colors, nothing was clicking. It's times like that that my lack of any art education really bites me in the ass. Paintovers would be more than welcome. As for the colors... I absolutely loved the sky and the face, I didn't know how to fix the clash without ruining one of them, so I left them. I think it's mainly the hideous scythe and belt buckle that are causing all the chaos anyway... Glad you liked the shadow, I think the bottom half of the image has far more life and motion than does the top.

Thanks for the comments. Again, glad you like the first one. The shadow was another total afterthought, done just to fill up some more space. Glad it worked.
As for the second, I loved the sky as it was, but I totally agree on the scythe... It begs to be totally redone. And the lower body bothered me as well. I'm awful at walking poses... Seems to me like they're slightly skewed to the right, throwing him off balance? But then when I view the legs alone, they look alright. Too short perhaps? Dunno exactly what it is about them, but it's bugging me too. |

hey Tinusch.
I really like the girl too and I also like the idea with the 2nd one you have there. The colors seem to be blend both warm and cold and I think the main-problem lays there with the picture, as for eg the eyes on the character is warm while at the same time the sky behind him is very cold.
I made an over-paint and I hope you are ok with it, sometimes it can be more evil to not show eyes or anything. I think in your 2nd picture you can show his other hand a bit more, the hand which holds the cape.
Anyway I like the pictures, especially the 2nd one. Keep up the good work.
