For some reason, when my Windows Media Player plays mp3 files, the pitch of the whole song will change randomly. It's really fucking annoying. I don't have that problem with itunes, foobar2000..etc, but I sometimes need WMP for certain things. How can I fix this? |

Hey Rob:
What version exactly? I use version 10, and I can't say I've had this problem with MP3s and WMP (I bounce between WMP and Winamp Pro. Although WMP10 is very, very slick, Winamp Pro will always remain my steadfast default for ripping and such). _________________ - Tom Carter

I've had problems with Version 10, but when I reverted back to version 9, the problem is still there. I use basically itunes, foobar2000, and WMP. I've given up on Winamp because it doesn't recognize as many files from my collection, and the navigating is slow. The older versions are nice, but you don't have many choices for sorting files.
I typically use foobar2000 for pure listening to music while working (just leave it on shuffle play). It recognizes the most amount of files in my collection, is very light on resources, and extremely fast. The only thing that sucks is no convenient sorting/display methods, and no CD burning options.
I use WMP for extensive sorting, playlist making, rating songs, burning CDs..etc. Only I hate is that it's extremely slow to refresh the songlist when you change the sorting.
itunes only get used when WMP fails. It does many things better than WMP, but the skin is damn bright that it hurts my eyes (downloadable skins only change a small part of the UI, while the rest is still too bright). itunes also is bad at displaying foreign languages. WMP is better at it. |

I had a similar problem in WMP10 where everytime I tried to play a divx movie or ASF movie, the sound would play at half the speed. It would play absolutely perfect in the Divx player but WMP10 couldnt do it. I tried reinstalling WMP10, reinstalling codecs and everything... finally the only thing that fixed it was reinstalling windows. (which I had to do because the hard drive i was using started making Clicking noises so I bought a new one to back up the stuff off of.)
That probably isnt much help.. but thats what fixed my prob. |

I haven't used Windows Media in months. Media Player Classic is free, unbloated (1.3 megabyte download), and plays more file types than WMP.
Off the top of my head, it plays:
DVD
CD
WAV
MP3
OGG
AVI
MKV
OGM
MPEG
MOV
RM
SWF
FLAC
and I'm sure there are more. 1.3 megs!!!! You know you want it. And you don't even have to install it. It's just one executable file. And it looks exactly like the old un-skinned version of WMP, so it's not hard to use at all. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

Ah, but you see, I only bother with WMP because of its library sorting function. It can sort by filepath, which many other media library players can't do. It also displays foreign characters better than other players (I listen to lots of Japanese, Chinese and Korean stuff, and I can read two of those languages).
Recently, I discovered J River Media Center. It's quite buggy, but it does pretty much everything I need, at a much better speed than WMP. Once it improves on stability, I'll just ditch WMP altogether.
If only the foobar2000 people would make a better UI and sorting methods, I'd be happy. I've tired the 3rd party scripts and they all pretty much suck so far.
I'm also trying Deliplayer 2 right now, and it's as good as foobar2000 (very similar), but I like the way it sorts and displays by actual folder structure more. But like foobar2000, it's sorting and UI sucks. |

I have VLC also, but the interface kind of sucks. I use it for a few DiVX files that I can't get working in MPC, but otherwise I hardly touch Videolan. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

by the way, I recommend taking a look at something called musicmagic mixer at www.predixis.com .
It attempts to analyze your music files and then create playlists automatically after you choose a couple of tracks of the kind of music you want to play. Sometimes it works well, sometimes a bit less so. Analyzing can take anything from a while to weeks depending on the size of your mp3 collection and whether or not anyone's analyzed the tracks you have yet. There's a trial version so try it out if you like. |

I just figured out what the problem is. I found the answer in a FAQ at the Microsoft website for troubleshooting WMP. It turned out that a mp3 decoder from Creative Labs is the culprit. I own a Nomad 3, and have the Creative Jukebox installed (to import songs into the Nomad 3), and the decoder it uses isn't compatible with WMP.
Mystery solved. Finally.
Affected - I'm almost afraid to try that mixer. I have over 35 gigs of music, and it might just take waaay to long. |
