Hi all,
Here a color/ value study I did to see how close I could get to my ref. Used a small jpeg but tried to paint in some details in the brushwork. Please tell me if you like it, dislike it, or whatever comes to mind, thanks for your time.

Hey, Daryl, that's pretty realistic. Hopefully you're not going to practice this photorealism in your concept illustrations:) |

Hey, that's very cool! the lighting works very well.
Small crits : the edges seem to be too unifrmly sharp overall, could have used some variation, like be a bit softer on the fingers (esoacially that light/shadow transition on the left hand)
also, I think the face (which is the primary focal point) could have used an extra layer of detail and precision (especially eyes and beard) . _________________ http://mv.cgcommunity.com/ |

Nice Daryl. Values are perfect. I have poor value sense
I agree with what M@ said. The face probably could use a bit more detail (mainly the eye i think) |

thanks guys, truly greatful for your replies!
annis, DJINN, Ian Jones: thanks a lot! glad you like.
m@: yep, you're right. when I get carried away in that brushwork, I guess the idea would be to crosshatch into other values and colors but a softer brush would probably be better and let the eye rest for a bit as well.
yeah, the face lacks detail. I should either paint in more details from imagination or have chosen a bigger ref pic.
choboroy: yep I agree.
sub_ben: hehe probably not. I wouldn't get nowhere nere the realism when painting from nothing
here are some progress shots..
thanks again! /D
