Out with it- I know there are some Harry Potter geeks here.
I managed to read some of the new book- it's by FAR the best of the seven.
I know that no one here is juvenile enough to do it, but PLEASE don't post any spoilers that you might have heard in here. |

I think I'll read it eventually but definitely not tonight and I'm not stressing about getting it as soon as possible.. if someone wants to spoil some of the events, sure. For me it's not about who dies and what happens, but to get to read about the sort of alternative world which is quite enchanting..
By the way, here in Finland you were able to buy the book 2 days in advance I think. Some summer assistant in a market had accidentally put them to sale a bit too early |

I've actually skipped reading all of the books in lieu of just watching the movies. That way, I figure the movies won't be ruined by any nagging thoughts of "the book was better!"
Plus, I'm an English major, and if any of my peers ever catch me with a copy of Harry Potter... _________________ QED, sort of. |

You're kidding!!! Is it elitism, or just that it's such a huge part of pop culture? To me, the latter kind of like saying "There's no way I'm ever going to watch Star Wars- too many people like it!". Which, by the way, I've had someone I used to work with actually say to me. |

Well, fantasy is scorned in general (even Tolkien) as teen fare, and the Harry Potter series is one of the absolute teensiest. I guess it's sort of elitism, but it's also just that I should be reading something more significant in my position. I don't really buy into that myself, but what can I do. _________________ QED, sort of. |

So what do these literary snobs say about Melville, Twain, and Dickens? In their day, these authors were rock stars along the lines of how JK Rowling is today. Mind you, I'm arguing with your friends, not you.

I actually only read the first book years ago. I was more into the movies. The last one was such a downfall tho that I might go for the book this time. Not that night tho,... : ) |

Think about it this way, at least it wasn't too emo.
An really, I have heard people say that JKR is a "storyteller", which actually kind of makes sense with her style, so I was very happy with the ending.
I think the Potter books are called "teeny" because they're just fun to read, so even teenagers will dive into them. JKR actually makes some really good points with her books, and says a lot of important stuff that most "mind candy" pop fantasy books don't say. Of course I figure most people don't bother to pick up on it, but she writes high quality literature in my opinion, and there's a reason there are whole shelves of fantasy books only a few people will ever read at the bookstore, but kids and adults alike line up to get Harry Potter at midnight.
Am I stating the painfully obvious? Haha, anyway, as is evident, yes, I think Harry Potter is fantastic. |

I finished reading it. I think it was definitely better than most Potter books.. on par with third. There was some moments that really made me cringe (those had to mainly do with the absurdly naive vision that was so visible in the first and second book). I thought the ending was fine, and I would have to agree that the last couple of chapters really said something important, if you bothered to think about it. 4th last and third last chapters were the best fantasy since Tolkien.. |
