The results of the several groupboards based on Groupboard's whiteboard app are amazing. I've seen and participated in lots of co-op pieces, and had a lot of fun with it. I was wondering, to all the coders out there, what the technical difficulties would be in writing a groupboard app with more colors? If we had, say, a 256 color palette, and maybe a zoom function, we'd be back in old-school pixeling bliss! I believe we could crank out some seriously amazing coop work, something that would be taken seriously by people outside our "digital art" realm. It's easy for us to appreciate making the best of 9 or so colors.. but even way back (as far as I can remember, I'm just 19) we had 16 colors.
I have no coding skills to speak of, but I believe this would be a project worth pursuing. There are already other excellent java-based draw/paint applets out there..
Heres a great example of one, albeit no group support:

oops.. thats the link to the applets page..
heres one directly to the paint:

It's by no means the perfect solution, but its tools are still far beyond whats available on the groupboard applet everyone's using right now. Who knows.. maybe what I'm looking for already exists.
Sincerely,

I searched for a replacement of the groupboard, but couldn't find any.
I Looked for source software to make a client/server kinda board, and the only thing is available is just a chat board in Java..
There are a few things difficult when making a groupboard, not the colors and not the zoom tool.
If you have to make a groupboard from scratch, the main problem is that you'll have to have a servlet running on a server which collects al the strokes and sends them to the other clients.
And a problem is that you'll have to collect all the strokes, so that if someone is loggin in, in the middle of the picture the server has to provide you with all the strokes that are made untill that moment.
This is a little tricky to program, but it can be done. The best thing is to get the client and server source code from the groupboard and refine it with more colors , a zoom tool and everything you want, because the hardest part is neatly programmed in the groupboard so far..
I can do Java, but it is to much work, and I personally don't think that we're going to have more fun on the groupboard, just nicer pictures.
Still, If someone is trying to make a groupboard I am willing to help if I got some spare time free..
