I was reading spooge demon's last post about his depiction of Captain Nemo and I wondered.
"What if, every 2 months or so, someone posted a theme(e.g. book, film, legend) and everyone did one pic based on that theme?"
It would be so cool to see all the different styles that appear, not too mention how everyone interprets a theme.
BTW - here's the final version of "The Poulps" from 20,000 leagues. NO MORE 20000 LEAGUES STUFF POSTED - HONEST!

Sounds like a great Idea. I think It's been tried before tho.
It would be hard to keep it going, and get it working, but if it could be pulled off I think it would yeild interesting results.

ceenda: cool idea, why not! Did you check out our old picture chain btw? Maybe someone can find the link ( I think it was called "Broken TV game" or something).
Oh and.. would you mind if I play a bit with your octopus picture? I have something in mind...

As long as it is a thematic thread, and no crits are required. Post at your leisure, etc. I think it would be a fun thing, just one more thing to post along to. I thought that's what forum's were kinda for anyway...
Maybe a couple themes to pick and choose from...it's gotta start somewhere...hell, let's do it...I have a theme, let me write it down and see if it could be pulled off. be back in a bit... |

Nex, go ahead! You've got me curious.
I understand the problems that arise.
A) A large thread every month could crash Dhabih's server.
B) It's perhaps not appropriate as a thread on a forum. I could set up a website with an upload facility, the theme at the top + a small bit of info on the subject, and post a thread saying that a new topic was up for those who want it.

I'm for it... and it won't crash Dhab's forum either since they're just link to images... it just takes a few bytes to store the link.

Frost: Good point!
However, people who don't want to participate might get fed up with the same thread staying at the top of the forum, so another site and the occasional 'it's a new topic' posting might be a better idea.

I am eriting this with the fight club raging in my ears right now, so this will probably be a little cyber-techno, oh well
I like the theme 3d Palette started with the post apocalyse images. I am going there too, but in a different light. I think I like this type of theme because it has to come from the imagination, and not from something already instilled into us visually. Although you could argue this point, by mentioning Blade Runner, Dark City, Akira, Mad Max, etc. these are a few peoples interperetations. It does not mean we have to confine ourselves to them, and since post apocolytum has not dropped into our laps yet, the future is waiting for us to color it...here we go, and be honest, tell me what you think, if this flies, I will make a thread for it, and it can sit and churn about for several months, we will give it a cut off date, so a new topic can be posted. Make a schedule, then no one can say, awe man, how long do we have to wait for the next one...
It is the year 2110, hopefully none of you will be alive then, it wont be pretty. The earth has been ravaged, not by war, but by mother nature. Storms of immense proportion have ripped across the globe. Hurricanes of over three hundred miles an hour are not uncommon. Tidal waves rather than gentle sets crash agaist the crumbling coast lines. CIties are basically abandoned because work schedules have been"temporarily delayed" for the next few decades...people, those who are left, have communed together to maintain some sensibility, rather than go insane. Most of those people are dead now anyway. The last few years, the storms have slowed down, and regular seasons are beginning to show again. People are pulling themselves out of the makeshift hubbles they have built...technology has sorta, well, industry in general has not been up and running for sometime now, so people have had to make do with what they have, and what they can scavage...The earth has taken over again, cities are running into the same situation the Mayan cities did, Vegetation is over running everything, and foundations are uprooting...freeways are nice smooth plains of dirt and weeds...the governments have been reduced to wealthy militias with fancy weaponry. They do most of the theiving and plundering, since they have the tools to overpower. But they are no concern to us now, for they are somewhere else far away, battling mother nature in their home region...one day we will have normality again, wont we?
You, the artist, have been holed away for years now perfecting your hobby, since that is all art has become these days. YOu have ample supplies saved away by your grandparents, unused, in hopes that one day they can be used again for creating beautiful images...
The storms are passing, and spring is coming. It is painting season. You can actually go outside and paint landscapes of this strange, yet oddly familiar world...
What do you see, what fascinates you, and what do you end up putting down on canvas...
What will your image be of? Here is your chance to draw or paint anything you feel within this world. YOu are like the preorientalists, going around recording everything you see. Jean Leon Gerome comes to mind, as he was one of the premiere artists of this movement. Look up his stuff as to how he recorded history with a brush...
I think this can produce some incredibly interesting images, as it doesn't have either figure, or object specific ideology in mind. It can be either, both or whatever.
I hope this gets some fires burning...if you guys like it, I will go ahead and make a thread for it, and see what the heck happens...
Back to work... |

Too cool. I can already see the imagery in my mind's eye.
I'm up for this one.

*NEWS*
Okay people, things are taking off!!!
Well, I've just been chatting to JayBee, a mate of mine who also happens to be a web developer. There seems to have been a good overall response to this idea, so here is the current suggestion.
A new site will be set up. New topics will be suggested every 2 months in order to get a good amount of input. There will be three seperate topics to choose from, though there is nothing to stop someone contributing to all 3 topics.
Fred Flick Stone : Thanks, you've just selected one of the first topics.
There will be an option to contribute to the topics and an option to simply view what has already been uploaded.
CRITIQUES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THESE SECTIONS - however, there will be a forum attached to each topic for critiqueing and debates on the topics at hand.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Okay, I'm in!
Shit! Fred you are satan! heheheheh!
But here's a question! IF I'm not mistaken some of the theme will be movie related right? Some of us may not have access to some of those movies, so how could they partake? I know there's pictures, but there's much more needed to influience. I don't have this problem, but waht about others that might? |

Yeah, the point being made about movie topics is quite important.
This is one of the reasons that 3 topics would be available instead of 1 so that there is at least a good chance that there will be something there for everyone.
Also, I thought about a voting system whereby people can submit topics and people can vote to see which ones they would like to appear.
Fred: Please go ahead with your Apocalypse posting as it will probably be a while before the site gets put up.

thought I'd dive in here and say "hi" - I'm the guy nick's been talking to about site development, and yeah - it WILL be a while before this goes live.
However, if anyone's got any comments, you can send them to me at
[email protected]
I might start up a separate thread to discuss it more, but I'm really interested in hearing what people want to do!

Top stuff Nex! I was kinda worried but you've definitly given it something it was lacking. I like it alot.
The colour works nicely as well and the sea bed kinda gives a sense of perspective to those angry cuttlefish. |

I like this Idea, it would be pretty damn cool, but it would have to be set up by Dhabih otherwise people wouldnt 'obey' if you know what I mean, and lots of people would tell everyone to do different themes, and where would the theme be found ?, it would have to be a seperate forum( I'd say ).
Oh crap, sorry I just replied as soon as I read the first entry, I didnt realise that you had already worked out how you where going to do it , Ooops
