Hello, chsxf, another friend and myself were boring in photoshop class and we did this, first we were going to do a simple sphere and eventually we switched to a rusty shield logo, and since we are playing icewind dale it turned like this
Tell us what you think about it.
PS : it isnt completely finished, we need to add some more dents and tears

Looks nice. Don't really know what to say about this one. The thing that seemed a little odd to me was the definiton on the circle on the outside. on the top left corner, it is like the large circle is blurred but at other locations on the perimeter, the edge is really sharp. ah ... it's probably nothing. Would be nice to see the image not being so hard up against it's bounding box though.

See ya on da flip side

too uniform and too much layers/layereffects/bevel and emboss...
try to break up the uniformity by overlaying a rocky or rusty texture(http://freetextures.com) that would help. also, to get a more corroded look, do the bevels by hand. right now they look too photoshoppy
good start though, i really like the streaky gold texture.
SporQ
-edit- sorry, that site is down. if you want one of the textures, i can upload one for ya.

the edge lighting seems to be the wrong way round. for me the edges seem to be bent the wrong way.
eetu.

Thanxs for the comments guys
Matt : yes you are right, we noticed that, maybe the shadow in the top left part is too prononced and that's why we have the empression of a blurry look instead of simply a shadowed area
SporQ : you are right too, we did this in class, whithout tablet, so filters and layers effects were our best friends I just used mouse for some airbrush strokes and i really hate drawing with the mouse, im so used to my tablet But i will get the PSD file tomorrow and i will try to arrange that, and especially adding some dents and irregularity to the metal, it is obviously too clean now
eetu : i know the edges are a bit weird, in fact for the bottom we wanted it to look like if there was a backlight
and for the top edge, since the light is almost a front light (just a bit up and left, and targeting at the center of the pic), it doesnt receive a lot of light, so we shaded it ...
I thought it had a good round look (like a smarties) so i didnt changed it
but I will do some test as soon as i bring back the psd file from school tomorrow |

I think the shield looks good. Love the use of curves. However, didn't you say it was supposed to be a rusty shield? Whenever I think of rust I get pictures of deeply corroded metal with orangy-reds and dirty looking greens in my mind. This shield just looks so purdy and clean
I think you could make it a lot more interesting if you went back and added in scrapes/dents/dirt/stains/etc...
My 2 cents |

Woa setherial, you did an awesome job with it, it has more "soul" than our version i think, mainly because you did most of the job by hand, but like i said we were in class whithout tablet so we did with filter and circles, because i really suck with a mouse when it comes to hand drawing
But i brought back the psd at home and i will finish it
you are totally right Jezebel, in fact yes it is a rusty shield that has been extremely polished
well in fact i am going to add the rusts and dents and little details now that i have the psd at home. I hope i will post a new version soon
and thanxs for all the comments |
