What do people aim for in a speed pic? Are there any certain rules that you are supposed to follow.

Are you aiming for photo realism in a sketch or are you trying to trick your brain into not using symbols?

At the end of the day are speed pics more useful than lengthy studies?

when I do a speedpic, I'm aiming for putting down the basic values, shapes & forms before getting into the details.

Speed picks for me (from what my art professor taught me) is generally a gesture drawing: To get down the fluid movement of the character you are drawing, or object. Too often than none most people put too much work into detail and the peice seems stiff or wooden.

I try to set a goal for myself. It's not always to just get the basic colors down-it could be to define something key in the image, and then fill around it in less detail. Or it could be to try to paint in negative values(ie; photo negative). Things like that get you to thinking more.

Binke: I used to think that was simply called the 'Mullins' technique until I learned how useful it was.

Bradford: I know what you mean. My art teacher used to go mental when I started my pics by working on one little bit. "Dang it! Just smack that paint on!"

JayBee: JJJJJAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYBBBBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! [a rather sorry in-joke...]

Things are okay, but a bit sad in a non romantic "frozen dinner for one" kind of way.

Seems you got the cheque then. Cool. You won't be sending your heavies round here then...

Anthony: Sounds interesting. Could you tell me a bit more about what you mean by painting in negative values?

speed pics

i haven't done many pics...but I'll see if i can bust out some speed pics...

ya and i think they're mainly for getting gestures and position/blocking etc down
after you fill in the details.

sort of a quick way of laying things down, getting the idea of your light source is also a good thing to think about while doing a speed pic

i gotta work on my stuff alot more
i've been busy doing too many other things lately
